Can you wear a solid gold Rolex with a tuxedo?

Breaking away from the leather strap tradition 💪

This past weekend I was in Naples, FL for a black tie wedding. Anytime I wear a tux I always reach for something on a black leather strap. My go-to tuxedo watch is usually a Rolex Cellini but for this wedding I wanted to try something different.

I have a bit of a love affair with gray watch faces. I think the platinum Rolex Yacht-Master 40mm with the slate dial is an incredibly underrated watch. I’m borderline obsessed with Rolex’s slate dial which can also be found in the Datejust and Day-Date models, like the Wimbledon.

So this time, I decided to pair my tux with a white gold Rolex Day-Date with, you guessed it, a slate dial.

This watch is incredibly understated and in my mind, it truly flies way under the radar. The white gold bracelet, although it may seem a bit extravagant at first glance and is no doubt heavier than a stainless steel bracelet or a simple leather strap, adds a touch of opulence and sophistication that elevates the overall aesthetic.

This watch was a great choice for the weekend. Its metal bracelet matched everything I wore, which is a real plus compared to a leather strap that can sometimes feel too formal. For an event like a destination wedding where packing light is key, this watch was perfect – it kept me punctual and stylish throughout the weekend, all without the need for any extra options.

What do you think about wearing a solid gold watch with a tux? What’s your go-to watch for formal attire?
